Barbados Museum

The Barbados Museum and Historical Society (BMHS) is a non-profit, non-governmental organization with a membership of over 1,000 individuals and companies.

The mandate of the Barbados Museum and Historical Society is:

To collect, document and conserve evidence of Barbados cultural, historical and environmental heritage; and to interpret and present this evidence for all sectors of society.

Description

Activities Required
Volunteers are required to provide administrative assistance mainly but then there are tasks which may accompany the specific departments. Here at the Museum we have an Education, Marketing, Events, Library, Development, Maintenance and General Administrative Departments and a Museum Shop which focuses on reception and customer service. Each department has administrative duties attached to it inclusive of but not limited to:

Administrative
Writing Letters
Typing
Photocopying
Receiving and sending e-mail

However, if persons are interested in more detailed work within a specific department they can consider the following:

Development / Funding Department
Writing Letters to request funding
Writing Sponsorship Letters and corresponding with potential and confirmed sponsors
Writing sponsorship proposals
Entering Membership information into Database
Assisting with Membership Queries
Marketing
Preparing Documents - reports, press releases, media advisories
Assisting with social media - posting, live streaming of events, maintenance of the all social media platforms
Assisting with the maintenance and enhancing of Museum Branding
Assisting with the coordination and execution of Press Conference
Assisting the Marketing Officer with any marketing initiatives.

For persons interested in working with events:

Co-coordinating Events
Event Planning
Liasing with Potential and Confirmed Clients ensuring Client Satisfaction at each step along the way
Prepping for Events
Attending Events
Completing post events Activities
Shop/ Customer Service
Working reception desk, making and transferring calls to respective persons
Processing patrons who purchase items in the shop
Processing Visitors both local and foreign when they come to visit the museum
Scheduling visits to the museum
Education
Assisting the education officer with the preparation of educational initiatives and proposals which will be used to reach the broader community and schools
Going into the schools and assisting with once a week for a 2-3 hours with the delivery of one of the Museum Programs
Assisting with the coordination of Education Outreach Programs
Tour Guiding
Any persons interested in learning about how to conduct and offer tours to visitors to the museum
Learning how to conduct walking tours of Garrison Historic Area and or Bridgetown
Conducting Bus Tours
Assisting with researching and developing routes for tours
Library
Assisting persons with how to conduct research in the Museums Library
Assisting with Newspaper Clippings
Preparing requested articles or research for clients
Assisting the librarian with tasks.
Maintenance
For persons who maybe more hands on:
Painting
Gardening
Carpentry
Electrical installation

The staff would not leave the students to do any of the above mentioned tasks alone or unsupervised. Each department has staff which would be able to guide and help facilitate the students.
