Government Analytical Services (GAS)

GAS is a department of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Nutritional Security. It is an analytical laboratory which is divided into 3sections – Inorganic Chemistry; Organic Chemistry; and Microbiology (Food and Water).

The laboratory provides microbiological and chemical analyses of water (Potable, wastewater and marine), soil, food, and environmental samples.

Its clients include Government entities such as the Environmental Protection Department, Barbados Water Authority; Private Sector companies inclusive of engineering and food manufacturing concerns as well as the General Public.

In its chemical analyses the lab utilises analytical techniques such as gas chromatography, liquid chromatography, ion chromatography, spectrophotometry (UV-Vis), Inductively coupled plasma (ICP) and continuous flow analysis.

In the microbiology section, techniques include but are not limited to pour plate; PCR and the use of a biolog equipment for the identification of aerobic and anaerobic bacteria, yeast and fungi as well as microscopes.

No of volunteers that can be accommodated

Seven students at any one time but it depends on the time of the year.
During the summer vacation we accommodate at least 4 students for 6 weeks drawn from 5th or 6th forms, the Barbados Community College the Samuel Jackman Prescod Institute of Technology for the Ministry of the Public Service programme.
Hence, only 3 University students can be accommodated during that time with the CAPE and CSEC students. Outside the 6 weeks up to a maximum of 7 students can be accommodated but that is subject to the discretion of the laboratory.

Description

Activities Required
The students will be exposed to the analytical procedures undertaken and will be allowed to assist in the conduct of tests under supervision, after an initial training period.
